Industry 4.0 for Chilean SMEs
without large investments

Industrial digital transformation is not exclusive to large corporations. Chilean industrial SMEs can take their first concrete steps with affordable investments and measurable results within weeks.

The myth that I4.0 is only for large companies

When people talk about Industry 4.0 in Chile, the examples that come up are always the same: CMPC, Codelco, Agrosuper. Large corporations with multimillion budgets. This creates a dangerous myth: that industrial digitalization is out of reach for SMEs.

The reality is different. The ecosystem of open source tools β€” Node-RED, InfluxDB, Grafana β€” makes it possible to implement a working plant information system at a fraction of the cost of proprietary solutions. An industrial SME can have real-time production data and automatically calculated OEE for a far smaller investment than it imagines.

πŸ’‘
A realistic starting point: An inexpensive Linux server, Node-RED (free), InfluxDB (free) and Grafana (free). The main cost is implementation and configuration β€” not licenses. That completely changes the equation for an SME.

Where to start? The first 3 steps

Step 1 β€” One sensor, one data point, one dashboard

Do not start with a total digital transformation project. Start with a concrete problem: "I don't know how much line 1 really produces per shift." Install a counter, connect it, visualize it. That first small success builds confidence and learning for the next step.

Step 2 β€” Calculate your real OEE

OEE reveals the gap between what your plant could produce and what it actually produces. In SMEs without monitoring, the surprise is almost always bigger than expected β€” and that justifies any later investment in automation.

Step 3 β€” Connect with management

Plant data on a Power BI dashboard changes the management conversation. When the owner or manager can see on their phone how much the plant produced today vs. yesterday, investment decisions in automation become easier to justify.

Funding available in Chile

Chilean SMEs can access support instruments for industrial digitalization. CORFO (Chile's economic development agency) offers subsidies for innovation and digital transformation projects. SERCOTEC has capital lines for technology modernization. Some of our projects with SMEs have been co-financed through these instruments β€” the net cost to the company ends up significantly lower.

Our proposal for SMEs: A 4-week pilot project β€” connect one production line, calculate real OEE, build a dashboard for management β€” with staged investment. If the results do not justify continuing, there is no commitment to a larger project.
